I took my two high school art classes to the Kimbell Art Museum last week to see the Bernini exhibit. The show consists of clay sculptures by Italian artist, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The sculptures are models for his larger than life marble statues. The museum had huge photographs of the marble statues next to the clay models. Theses were some of the most beautiful sculptures I have ever seen! What I loved most about his work was the moments in time he captured that told a story. As an illustrator, the story telling strength he captured was inspiring. My favorite was the statue of David. I have seen Michelangelo's David when I went to Europe in college. That is a gorgeous statue but I think I like Bernini's even more. Bernini tells the story of David throwing the stone at Goliath instead of just a beautiful standing figure. Saul's heavy armor is at David's feet, his torso twisted, his intent gaze, his toes clenching, everything tells you what the moment in the story was like, just like an illustrator must do for a book. So Bernini is my favorite sculpting illustrator. What made the experience even better was sharing it with my students!
